Bankruptcy help for Aurora families

Aurora is Colorado's third-largest city, and it stretches across three counties: Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas. Whether you live near the Southlands, Saddle Rock, or the Aurora Highlands, or in north Aurora near Fitzsimons, you can meet with me at my office on South Parker Road, by phone, or by Zoom.

Most of my Aurora clients come to me after a job loss, medical bills, a divorce, or a wage garnishment. Many have tried for months to keep up with minimum payments. Bankruptcy gives them a legal way to stop collection immediately and start over, usually while keeping their home, car, and retirement savings.

You'll work with me directly, not a call center or a paralegal. I'll review your income, debts, and property before anything is filed, explain whether Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 fits, and give you a fixed price in writing.

What to expect

How filing works for Aurora clients

  1. Free consultation. We talk by phone, Zoom, or at my Aurora office. I'll tell you honestly whether bankruptcy makes sense.
  2. Fixed price. If it does, you get a written, flat fee. Chapter 7 fees start at $1,000, plus the $338 court filing fee.
  3. Documents and a short course. You gather pay stubs, tax returns, and statements, and take a required online credit counseling course. Document checklist.
  4. Filing. Your case is filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver, and the automatic stay stops collection immediately.
  5. Meeting of creditors. About a month later, a short meeting with the trustee, usually by video. I'm there with you.
  6. Discharge. Most Chapter 7 cases end with a discharge about four months after filing. See the full timeline.

Being sued or garnished? Depending on where you live in Aurora, a collection lawsuit is usually filed in the Arapahoe County, Adams County, or Douglas County courts. If a creditor wins, it can garnish up to 20% of your disposable pay and freeze your bank account. Filing bankruptcy stops the lawsuit or garnishment the day you file, no matter which county court it's in.
